about

It’s with intimate detail that Sydney two‐piece kyü piece together their music. Freya Berkhout and Alyx Dennison have a distinct songcraft that yields the most magnificent results, a distinct style and sound that intersperses vibrant melodies amid vast soundscapes. It’s pop as much as it is experimental, ornate as it is raw, classical and contemporary in equal parts.

Starting making music together only a year ago, kyü have managed more than most in 12 months. They’ve shared a stage with some of the world’s more interesting pop experimenters (Yeasyer, Patrick Wolf, High Places, Why?, Tenniscoats, and Australia’s finest at Homebake 2009), won two prestigious competitions (Sydney Uni band comp and the Hopetoun Incentive) and then, above all this, they’ve recorded an album.

But it’s not just an album. Its ten mind‐bending tracks that will change the way you listen to pop music. Building whole other‐worlds out of a suitcase of instruments, kyü combine percussion, samples, beats, synths and the most comprehensive musical appetite to create vignettes of a parallel pop universe, intertwined with harmonies to keep both your heart and head whirling with excitement.

Encyclopaedic in its musical references and energetic in its delivery, kyü have created a musical masterpiece that goes beyond their year together, and their years as individuals.

‘One of the most exciting acts in Sydney at the moment. Somewhere between The Knife and Animal Collective. Awesome stuff.’ ‐ Triple j

‘They are so refreshing it feels like a splash of cold water in the face.’ ‐ The Brag
